CANstruction

Canstruction is a spectacular community service national design competition benefiting millions of hungry people nation wide. It is a non-profit foundation of the Society of Design Administration (SDA) and is sponsored in partnership with the American Institute of Architects. Teams of architects and other design professionals build enormous (800 cubic feet) structures made entirely out of canned foods.  At the conclusion of the event, all the food is donated to our local Food Bank the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

This year the award ceremony was held on April 24 at the TMCC Student Center.  The results for this year:

Best Meal: Hershenow + Klippenstein: “The Great Food Pyramid and the River Nile”
Best Use of Labels: Carson High School AutoCad Team #1 (HurriCAN): “We CAN Draw You Away From Hunger”
Structural Ingenuity: Sierra Pacific Power Company: “Looks Funny, Saves Money”
Jurors Favorite: The Glenn Group: “The Power of Cake”
Honorable Mention 1: Carson High School AutoCad Team #2 (Master Drafters): “Taking a Shot at Hunger”
Honorable Mention 2: The Hunter Lake Fifth Grade Dragons: “The Hunter Lake DraCAN”

AIA Northern Nevada Canstruction History:

2003 was Reno's first competition and we raised 21,500 pounds of food for our Community Partner, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. In 2004 we raised 18,300 pounds and in 2005 we raised 20,500.  In 2006, the event was our largest ever as 18 teams competed and raised 40,000 cans of food!

Our competition is unique, in that we encourage student teams with designer mentors to assist.  Funds are available to assist with can purchases for student teams.

In 2006 we gained a new partner, the Builders Association of Northern Nevada and moved to a new venue, the Student Center at Truckee Meadows Community College.  This allows the projects to be on display for a much longer time.
